The problem .....

Many organisations do not have a fully documented approach of how to build up a project from scratch and what to include or consider.

Many new project managers or people new to planning need a framework around which to work and helpful checklists of actions and questions to guide through the process.

There needs to be a step by step guide and help with what to include and lists of popular items ready to drag and drop into the plan.

Creating a Project Specification document or a PID (Project Initiation Document) is often a first step needed before a project can be approved by management and needs to be comprehensive enough to allow informed consideration. If you have never done such a document, you need help.

Often at an evaluation or tender stage - a Bar(Gantt) chart is required with costs and some early indication of labour resource needed.

The solution .....

Project Highway is a new pc based software product that is a project management Toolkit for £375 only that is fully customisable and allows the Executive/Programme Management or the Project Manager to control the initial project planning process.

You would expect to input data in certain steps – but some steps are optional.

  • PROJECT is compulsory and needs details of project name, project manager & start date, as well as the Business Case and other information needed for a PID/Project Specification.
  • PHASES (optional) allows you to divide the project into sections of tasks if necessary *
  • REQUIREMENTS (optional) allows you to list the final deliverables *
  • QUALITY (optional) allows you to document the quality control requirements.
  • RISKS (optional) allows you list all possible risks*
  • TASKS allow you to list tasks under each phase and estimate the durations*
  • PERSONNEL allows you to allocate disciplines or named people/equipment to each task*
  • COSTS allows you to allocate a budget to each task
  • FINAL HEALTH CHECK creates a tick list of checks to ensure that all aspects have been addressed or at least highlighted for consideration.
  • EXPORT allows you to start up Project Commander or Microsoft Project (Primavera & PowerProject to follow) or to save the project as a MPX file or in Excel/Word. It also shows a basic Gantt chart.

*There is a library of industry specific items that you can drag & drop into the step or you can insert your own input.

The whole document can be printed out as a total project specification, or as a PID (Project Initiation Document). It can also be saved in Word to act as a substantial part of a PID document (as prescribed by PRINCE2) for further editing.
